Come Away to the Desert

Where scorch burns the rotten
pale rocks lie their stories along the riverbed
faults are many and blame is never done

Come live in the desert
where luscious things die
and the dust of the ancients
tastes sandy in your eyes

Come lie in the desert with me
until everything we imagine is true
we’ve been framed by many
jagged peaks pushing bravely up
outline the empty sky

Come away to the desert
where there is no time
but the bones of the earth
no rules
but the Sun’s unquenchable thirst

Come away
and pray with me
until our minds become one
and God isn’t some mystery
we think is long gone
until our hearts feel the memory
we were always apart
but never alone
